Boosting tourism through better information

Issue:
To boost countryside tourism by providing visitors and potential visitors with better information.

Domestic tourism by UK residents fell by 6% in 2001, with a loss of £2bn to the industry*. Foot and mouth disease also highlighted a broader rural tourism issue. It is often hard to find co-ordinated information about visiting the countryside, both before you arrive and while you are there.

One solution:
Public and private sectors working together to provide easily accessible information on the countryside.

How can this be achieved:
Public and private organisations are collaborating on campaigns such as Your Countryside, You`re Welcome to spread the news that the English countryside welcomes its visitors back.

The benefits are:

  • A clear message that the countryside is open for visiting in 2002.
  • Better informed visitors able to make more of their trip.
  • Greater opportunities to promote local and regional attractions, including food and drink.
  • A vehicle to promote information on the countryside issues and visitors` responsibilities.
